What is the best way to root cuttings of S. opuntioides?
Specifically what type of substrate (100% coir or 50% perlite/50% coir)? Also lighting requirements. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Hi Jorge

S. opuntioides will root in everything. The important thing is, to put the cutting just on the ground, instead of in the ground. it will take a week of three, but roots will appear. Even if you put it in a glass of water it will form roots.

This species will grow in every mixture, but it has to be airy. We have grown it in pure vermucilite and it flowered the same year. Other mixtures we have used are pure bims (kind of airy vulcanic sand), cocopeat etc. mineral mixtures will give a more spiny appearance.

The mixture we are using right now consists of fine cocopeat (50%), coarse cocopeat (20 %), vermiculite (25 %), (vulcanic sand (5 %) and we add some osmocote fertiliezer.

S. opuntioides does like fresh air and some shade. We have grown it in full sun though (but it will stay very compact) and in full shade (and you will get no spines on younger pads).

Hope this is of some help.

Thank you Ruud. Does the same apply to S. microspaerica?

Hi Jorge

S. microsphaerica is a bit different as it comes from a higher altitude. This species also likes a lot of fresh air and can have more cold.
We did not try this one to root just in a glass of water. maybe it works we don not know.

Like S. opuntioides just put it on the ground. We use the standard mixture we mentioned for S. opuntioides and it grows fine. We like to reroot this one outside in summer. As we are planning a video on the cultivation of Schlumbergera we will pay extra attention to this topic in the vid.

I received an s.opuntioides cutting on 29-6-2016, and already making roots. I first let it rest on the soil, but sterilized the cutting five days ago, and put it in a high humidity box with wet pure perlite in it. Today it is already showing the start of new roots :)
So far perlite has been an ideal rooting medium. When i transplant i just leave the perlite on and let it grow.
